Shindzela Tented Camp can be reached by road from the direction of Hoedspruit town, Hoedspruit airport, the city of Nelspruit or Orpen Gate in the Kruger National Park. For routes from farther afield to these places, please visit Google Maps. For enquiries phone the camp at +27 82 307 9493.

From Hoedspruit town and Hoedspruit airport

Follow the R40 out of town in the direction of White River, past the Pick n Pay shopping centre. Travel some 6 to 7 km outof town, and take the left turn-offing marked Timbavati and Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (situated next to the air force base). Travel through the Guernsey Control Gate. **Continue along this road past the Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport and past the Kapama Game Reserve until you reach the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve entrance gate, a large thatch structure. This is where you pay your vehicle gate entry fee (enquire about the amount from Shindzela Tented Camp management when you book your trip). From the Timbavati gate, travel about 13,1 km and then turn right where there is a big rock structure on your left, following the road signs to Shindzela/Johnniesdale. Continue along this dirt road for another 6 to 7 km and at a 4-way junction, turn LEFT, again following the Shindzela/Johnniesdale pointers. At approximately 6 km you will reach the wooden signs (rock sign on the left)to Shindzela. Follow this all the way until you reach the camp.

From Nelspruit


Leave Nelspruit and travel to White River on the R40 road. In White River, continue to follow the signs for the R40 to Hazyview. En route, you will past the Casterbridge Centre and later Da Gama Dam and then arrive at a T Junction just before Hazyview. At the T Junction, turn left into Hazyview. Travel straight through town and past the Perry’s Bridge Centreon your LHS. Continue straight through town and follow the R40 to Bushbuckridge. Travel straight through Bushbuckridge, continuing on the R40 to Acornhoek. Travel past Acornhoek, still staying on the R40. Pass the RHS turning to the KrugerOrpen gate. Just a couple of kilometres ahead, turn right (still on the R40) in the direction of Phalaborwa/Hoedspruit. Followthis road for about 20 minutes, and take the turn-off to the right marked Timbavati/Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport. Travel through the Guernsey Control Gate.

From Orpen Gate, Kruger National Park


There is no public access from Orpen Gate to the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve through the Kruger National Park. You will have to travel back to the R40. In order to reach Shindzela by 14:30, you must depart from Orpen Gate by 12:00 at the latest. From Orpen Gate, travel on the tar road all the way to the T-Junction with the R40 road. Turn. Right and about 1 km further, turn right again to follow the R40 to Hoedspruit/Phalaborwa. Travel for approximately 20minutes, past the Cheetah Research facility and the Kapama Game Reserve. Turn right at the sign that reads Timbavati/Hoedspruit Eastgate. Pass through the Guernsey Control Gate.

From Johannesburg and Pretoria to Hoedspruit


From Johannesburg via the N12 to Belfast, and from there via the R540 and the R36 to Hoedspruit (approximately 5 hours 15 minutes). From Pretoria via the N4 to Belfast and from there via the R540 and the R36 to Hoedspruit (approximately 5 hours). Alternatively, travellers from both Johannesburg and Pretoria can travel from Belfast along the N4 to Nelspruit, and from there via the R40 to the Timbavati turn-off just before Hoedspruit (approximately 6 hours). A fourth option from both Johannesburg and Pretoria is a the route via the N1 North to Polokwane, and from there via the R71 to Haenertsburg, Magoebaskloof and Tzaneen; and then past Gravelotte via the R526 to Hoedspruit (also approximately 6 hours).

** From Hoedspruit, follow the route to Shindzela Tented Camp as set out above.


NB: All guests checking in must try to be at the Timbavati Gate by 13:30 at the latest. The driving time from the Timbavati Gate to Shindzela Tented Camp, mostly along a dirt road, is about 1 hour. The speed limit in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is 50 km/h. Do not rely on your GPS in the Timbavati – you will likely get the wrong directions.


Important information


Check-in time at camp is between 12pm and 3pm (we serve lunch at 1430) If you do arrive in camp later than 15:00, you will unfortunately miss your first afternoon game drive (which departs at 4pm). And since this is a wilderness area, we do not want you to get lost driving in the reserve when it is dark. If you are going to be late due to unforeseen circumstances, please let us know on 082 307 9493. Once you enter the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, please do not step out of your vehicle at any time. Should you get stuck for whatever reason, phone us and wait in your vehicle for a Shindzela staff member to come and assist you. In any case, we should be aware of your arrival and will thus come looking for you should you not arrive on time.
