Game drives and walks

Guests staying at Shindzela Tented Camp have the option of two safari activities per day:

1. Two game drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles with experienced guides and trackers.

2. One game drive and one morning walking safari with experienced guides.

Should you wish to participate in a morning walking safari, please speak to your guide upon arrival in camp to arrange this.

Children 10 years and older may participate in game drives.

No one under 16 years of age allowed on walking safaris.

We generally only allow 8 guests per vehicle, but our Land Cruisers can accommodate 10 guests comfortably. A maximum of 8 guests are allowed on a walking safari.

An upper age-limit does not apply to driving safaris, but the limit is 65 years for walking safaris. For various reasons, including all guests’ wellbeing and enjoyment, this is not negotiable.

Safety instructions

Your safari guide will give you a thorough safety briefing before your driving or walking safari, so that you are comfortable with the rules and safety instructions pertaining to the particular activity. Please do remember that you are in a wildlife environment, and it is important to listen to your guide at all times. Please feel free to ask questions. Photography is allowed on all activities, but under the guidance of your safari guide.

NB: Also read Shindzela Tented Camp’s safety rules.

Game drives

We offer two game drives per day – one drive early morning and one late afternoon and early evening, lasting for approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, depending on animal movements.

Since we operate in a private concession area, we are permitted to drive off-road into the bush in search of predators or unusual sightings; and – depending on sightings – we can stay out later on activities, including during late-afternoon/night drives.

Walking safaris

Walking safari outings usually last between 2 and 2.5 hours. During the summer months, these may be of shorter duration due to the thicker vegetation and summer heat.

All walking trails are led by experienced, armed trails guides. A maximum of 8 guests are allowed on a guided walk. No children under 16, no adults over 65 years of age. Children 16 to 21 years of age to be accompanied by an adult(s).

For their own safety and enjoyment, guests participating in walking trails should adhere strictly to the instructions given by the guides.

Please note that our walking trails are weather permitting. For example, if in the opinion of the specific guide it is too windy or rainy, no walk will be conducted.

Please do let your guide know upon arrival at the camp if you would like to participate in a walking trail.

What to wear/bring

Neutral-coloured safari clothing, a hat, comfortable, closed walking shoes, a fleece and a light raincoat (depending on the weather), sunblock, a camera, and binoculars.
